Rowing on the Sea (Coastal Rowing)

The Dynamics of Coastal Rowing

Coastal rowing on the Wadden Sea is an unparalleled experience, but it requires different preparation than rowing on inland waters. You are rowing on tidal water, which means that currents, wind, and water levels have a major influence on the trip. In addition, weather conditions can change quickly here. The adventure of coastal rowing also means flexibility: each tour is unique and the final route is determined on the day itself based on the elements.

Packing List: What to bring?

To be able to row comfortably and safely, the following equipment is essential:

  • Clothing in layers: Make sure you can easily put on or take off clothes. On open water it is often colder and windier than ashore.
  • Water shoes (Crucial): Provide sturdy water shoes or surf shoes that do not come off easily. During many of our tours (such as to Schiermonnikoog) we have to wade through the mud. You are guaranteed to lose loose flip-flops or crocs in the mud mud!
  • Life jacket: Bring one if you have one (and if you indicated this during registration).
  • Water & Snacks: Always bring enough drinking water in the boat, and possibly some light snacks for on the way.
  • Please note: Lunch and the concluding dinner are usually arranged and included (unless stated otherwise in the specific tour information).

Example Tour: Crossing to Schiermonnikoog

One of the classics is the crossing from Lauwersoog to the marina of Schiermonnikoog. This route goes via the Brakzand and offers beautiful views over the drying mudflats.

Below you see an example of the route we sail.
